STAINED GLASS/LEADLIGHTS

New Commissions

If you require a new commission Bert always works with his client’s to design an artistically unique and exciting piece with elements to complement your surroundings. He will listen to your ideas give you suggestions that may suit your décor and when the client and designer find the right combination of ideas Bert will then supply a scaled drawing for his clients to view and make changes if needed. Clients are welcome to choose their own colours and glass textures from over 200 types of glass in our studio.

When renovating or extending an exisiting building we specialise in reproducing designs already in the property to tie in with your new renovations and extensions. We are always sympathetic to the original panels in place, reproducing the new panels with the same glass if still available or with a glass that is as close as possible to the original that is currently available. All glass alternatives will be discussed with the client before any work would commence.

Design Glass also offers an onsite Measure and Installation Service on all our work. Before any work will commence Bert will visit the property to take glazing measurements, check framework and access to site. When your new commission is completed in our studio Bert will be on site to install.

Repairs & Full Restorations

Repairs

When an accident or vandalism occurs your stained glass/leadlight can be repaired. If the majority of the panel is in good order with only a few broken pieces of glass in the panel, this is what we call a repair.

To repair a stained glass/leadlight panel correctly the entire panel must be removed from its frame, and if it is an external window or door a temporary glaze is installed. The panel is then returned to the studio were it is laid flat on a workbench. We cut the panel open replacing the broken glass pieces, the panel is then re-soldered and made weatherproof again. We return to your property and reglaze your repaired stained glass/leadlight panel back into it’s frame. This is the recommended method for repairing your stained glass/leadlights offering long term structural integrity.

On- site Repairs

We are often asked about onsite repairs. We do this type of repair very rarely, we do recommend this method as it leaves your panel unsoldered on one side with black putty holding the glass in place. Let me explain. An onsite repair is only used for a short term fix. Usually used on panels that have regular maintenance and refurbishment, for example a church may have a broken piece of glass and it is too costly to remove the entire 3metre panel for one piece of broken glass but it is being removed in the near future for restoration or maintenance. This is the procedure – the lead channel on the inside of the panel is cut each side of the solder joint and peeled back, the putty or cement is removed leaving the broken glass to fall out, the new glass is then cut and ground to size to fit in the opening. Black putty is then smeared on each side of the glass to try and keep it weatherproof, the lead channel is then pushed back over the black putty and new piece of glass – there is no soldering of the joint to secure the lead as you can not solder in an upright position.

Full Restorations

Restoration of a Stained Glass/Leadlight panel is a little more complicated. Some of the signs that your panel is in need of restoration:

Your window has been smashed in.

Your window has bowing.

The lead has deteriorated and may have a white chalky appearance.

Glass rattles inside the lead channel as the putty has fallen out.

Your panel is no longer weather proof.

Solder joints are broken.

Glass is starting to break for no reason.

When restoring your Stained Glass/Leadlight panels Bert is always sympathetic to the original panel replacing broken glass with the same glass if still available or with a glass that is as close as possible to the original. We sometimes change glass over on the opposite side of the broken panel to help keep the aesthetics of the panel. All glass alternatives will be discussed with the client before any work would commence. Lead will be replaced that has turned chalky or has deteriorated. All broken solder joints will be re-soldered. Your panel will be placed in a bath solution to remove all old paint, putty, silicon and dirt. The final step to the restoration is the cementing process this will make your panel weatherproof and looking great, ready for the next 60 – 100 years.

Zinclight Repairs

A Zinclight panel must be removed from it’s frame to be repaired. You can not repair onsite for the same reasons explained in leadlight repair. Zinclights usually have a more silver appearance, use a variety of clear textured glass and most designs are from the Art Deco period meaning very straight line with very few curves. Zinclights can not be restored but they can be repaired. Most panels by the time they reach us the solder joints have broken and the putty has dropped out of the zinc channel. People usually onlynotice when they have one or more broken pieces of glass. This means when you remove zinclight panelfrom their frame the panel falls apart leaving Bert with a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces are carefully placed on a workbench, broken glass is replaced, we arealways sympathetic to the original panel replacing broken glass with the same glass if still available or with a glass that is as close as possible to the original. We sometimes change glass over on the opposite side of the broken panel to help keep the aesthetics of the panel. All glass alternatives will be discussed with the client before any work would commence. The zinc channel and glass are reunited on the workbench. All broken joints will bere-soldered and the entire panel is hand puttied.

SANDETCHED/SANDBLASTED GLASS

Hand Drawn Personalised New Commissions

Hand drawn designs use no stencils or computers, as the name indicates they are hand drawn, hand cut and step sandblasted to give our clients and individual design. Usually our clients have an idea of what they want when they come to see us, they may even bring a picture or photo that they wish to recreate on glass. Bert works with them discussing artwork, size, thickness of glass and the installation of the finished panel. A scaled drawing is provided to the client just outlining positioning and dimensions on their glass. Once everyone is agreed the glass is ordered. Bert will now tape up the glass and hand draw the design on the taped glass. The client is asked to visit our studio to see the artwork and make any changes if needed. When the client is happy with the artwork, Bert will hand cut the design out of the tape. It now enters the sandblast booth were the step sandblasting takes place leaving a detailed sandetched glass panel ready to be installed.

Computer Designed Patterns & Logos

When we say Computer Designed we mean Bert has drawn the design and it is now in our computer. The design can be created to any size or shape of your glass. Usually these patterns come as a positive image which we call Normal Sanblasting were the pattern is sandblasted and the background is clear or a negative image, Invert Sandblasting the pattern is now clear and the background sandblasted, this is usually used for privacy. Design Glass has many designs to choose from in our archives so our clients are spoilt for choice. If you are looking at the same theme running through your property this may be an option to create a repeat sandblast to many of your areas and because the designs are drawn in house this will give you an individual theme of art work for your property.

Here are just a few more examples of applications were sandetched/sandblasted Glass can be use:

*Modesty strips sandblasted to your shower screen

*Shower Screens with artwork or replacing art patterns of yester year when broken.

*The back of a mirror sandblasted then back lit with LED lighting

*Mirrors, table tops and kitchen cabinets with sandblasted artwork.

*Logos, signage and Honour Boards for business applications.

*Glass Wall dividers with sandetched art work.

Replacement fo Existing Broken Etched Designs

When an accident happens, it had to be the sandblasted glass panel that is broken, don’t worry we can create a new panel for you. If the breakage has just occurred don’t through the broken glass pieces away, gently place them in a box, we can recreate your design from your broken pieces. If the broken panel is long gone and you have an existing panel still on site we can use this as a template to create your new panel.
